ApiSave™ research has demonstrated multiple benefits for honeybee colony health:
Disease Pressure Resilience: Helps colonies maintain higher brood and larvae survival when facing European Foulbrood (EFB), a bacterial disease caused by Melissococcus plutonius that can kill bee larvae before they develop into adult bees.
Varroa Mite Management: Reduces Varroa mite impact and helps to maintain low Varroa mite load in treated colonies, addressing one of the most serious threats to honeybee survival.
Colony Productivity: Colonies treated with ApiSave™ maintain honey production and population growth even under disease and parasite pressure assuring bountiful products and optimal pollination.
Safe and Well-Tolerated: Bees tolerate ApiSave™ applications well with no negative impacts on colony health or productivity.
One research study at the National Bee Diagnostic Centre tested ApiSave™ on European Foulbrood (EFB) infected bee larvae on hives in both laboratory and field conditions.
Laboratory Results: When honeybee larvae infected with M. plutonius were fed with ApiSave™ during controlled rearing:
• Larvae survival rates reached 67-75% after 4 days
• Untreated infected larvae had only 4% survival
• ApiSave™ demonstrated clear protective effects to bee larvae
Field Trial Results: When naturally infected colonies were treated with ApiSave™ in icing sugar:
• 3 out of 6 colonies successfully recovered from EFB infection
• Treatment was applied weekly over 2 weeks
A field trial was conducted during an 8-week period with 150 colonies in Huatulco, Mexico, testing three different ApiSave™ doses delivered in sugar dust.
Key Findings:
• ApiSave™ Dose 2 showed the strongest effect: 39% relative reduction in mite levels(39% mite load decrease from 17.6% to 10.7% infestation) whereas control group(sugar only) increased 53% in mite infestation.
• Despite heavy mite pressure, treated colonies remained productive and continued producing honey throughout the trial.
These two independent studies demonstrate that ApiSave™ provides multi-faceted protection for honey bee colonies under bacterial disease or varroa mite pressure, all while maintaining colony productivity. ApiSave™ represents a significant advancement in natural beekeeping solutions. As an alternative to direct feeding, the plant-based compounds can be distributed throughout the colony as bees groom themselves and share food, providing colony-wide protection against disease and pest pressure.
As a food supplement, ApiSave™ can be delivered to bees without any changes to current beefeeding practices.
